Memoir chronicling life of Penang's first Chief Minister to be unveiled

GEORGE TOWN: The memoir of Penang's first Chief Minister Tan Sri Wong Pow Nee's will be launched on Jan 8, 2015 at the old club house of Chinese Recreation Club (CRC) in Jalan Burma from 2pm to 3.30pm.
Lim Guan Eng, the present chief minister is expected to attend the event.
Wong's son, Peter Wong Tet Phin said that the memoir titled "Unsung Patriot: Wong Pow Nee", records his father's journey, rising from humble beginnings as a farmer and school teacher to the state's first Chief Minister from 1957 to 1969.
Peter wrote the book with Koay Su Lyn, a lawyer and research analyst at the Penang Institute.
He said this memoir will fill the gaps of the state's post-independence development history while highlighting Wong's personal struggles and major contributions during his turbulent tenure.
He said this during a press conference announcing the launch of the memoir, at the Khek Association in Lebuh King today.
Peter said this book will highlight his father's involvement in the Cobbold Commission of 1962 which gathered information from East Malaysia for the formation of Malaysia and his contributions to the growth of Penang.
Wong died on Aug 31, 2002 at the age of 91. He left behind his wife Puan Sri Law Siew Kim, seven sons and three daughters.
The retail price of the book is RM59.90 but it will be sold at RM50 on the day of the launch.
Wong is Penang's first Chief Minister followed by his successor Tun Dr. Lim Chong Eu and later Tan Sri Dr. Koh Tsu Koon.
