KUALA LUMPUR: To accelerate the growth of the city's tourism sector over the next 10 years to become a leading tourist destination, Kuala Lumpur City Hall (KLCH) has initiated development of a comprehensive Kuala Lumpur Tourism Master Plan 2015-2025.
Mayor Datuk Seri Ahmad Phesal Talib told reporters that the plan is a blueprint that will grow the tourism industry.
"The plan is an articulate 10-year strategic agenda and action plan, prepared by experts in both the public and private sectors, with the intention of getting both sectors involved in its implementation.
"This master plan is intended to be a catalyst for transformational growth that will turn KL into a world-class tourism destination," he said in his speech during the launch of the plan at Sasana Kijang today.
Ahmad Phesal said the plan would quadruple the city's international tourism receipts from RM19 billion in 2013 to RM79 billion in 2025.
The plan is expected to encourage innovation that will allow both existing tourism operators and potential investors to identify business ventures within its framework.
Initiated by the KL Tourism Development Council and developed by KLCH with collaboration from Roland Berger Strategy Consultants and the Ministry of Federal Territories. the plan will be implemented based on the five key growth opportunities – to fully capture demand for distinct multi-cultural experiences; strengthen premier shopping destination position; establish Kuala Lumpur as a nature and adventure tourism destination; enhance position as the preferred destination for MICE, education and medical tourism; and ensure provision of world-class infrastructure and tourism products that are well maintained.
These five key growth opportunities will then be achieved through 47 initiatives in 10 tourism segments and enablers which include shopping, entertainment, luxury travel, sports, education, culture, heritage and places of interest, and nature and adventure.
Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Mansor, who launched the master plan, said although the task of promoting KL as a tourist destination might be an uphill task, it will be achievable as long as both the public and private sectors are able work with each other to promote KL.
