BUTTERWORTH: A clouded leopard prowling around a construction site in Sungai Dua, near here, was captured by workers at the site on Wednesday.
About 10 of them managed to catch the animal, known locally as "harimau akar", during the 5pm incident.
A Fire and Rescue Department Services spokesman said the workers had notified the department of the capture.
Nine firemen and two fire engines went to the scene and managed to secure the animal which was sent to the Taping Zoo, the spokesman said in a text message.
When contacted, Penang Wildlife Department director Loo Kean Seong said his department was in the process of getting more information on the capture.
He would also be contacting his Perak counterpart to obtain more information on the animal being taken to the zoo there.
"If the department captures an animal, it is released back into the wild," he told theSun.
Loo pointed out the clouded leopard was a protected species under the Wildlife Conservation Act 2010.
He said the species was not considered to be aggressive adding that there were no records of humans being attacked by these animals.
He said clouded leopards could be found in the entire peninsula and preyed on small animals.
