3,440 female inmates in prisons nationwide

    KUALA LUMPUR: There are 3,440 female inmates serving their sentences in prisons nationwide, the Dewan Negara was told today.
    Deputy Home Minister Datuk Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said that of the total, updated on March 31, 2,188 are foreigners.
    "From the total number of prisoners, 1,252 are Malaysians - with 776 of them Malays, 153 Chinese, 130 Indians, and 153 of other ethnicities," he said this in reply to a question by Senator S. Bagiam Ayem Perumal.
    Wan Junaidi added that from the total, 181 female inmates are repeat offenders.
    "Meanwhile, there are 99 female inmates who are 'hard core criminals' for being convicted of crimes including drug trafficking under Section 39(B) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, murder and kidnapping," he said.
