Man killed trying to botch break-in

PETALING JAYA: An elderly man who attempted to botch a break-in died moments after a fiery struggle with two burglars at his house at Jalan 3/56 here, yesterday.
After the 3pm incident, Duncan Nehru Devaraj was pronounced dead moments after he was rushed to University Malaya Medical Centre.
Petaling Jaya police chief ACP Azmi Abu Kassim said the burglars came to the victim's house under the pretense of delivering a package.
"The suspects asked for a signature on the shipping papers and the victim had then gone into the house to look for a pen.
"The burglars took advantage of the situation and began to assault the victim with a machete and threatened his wife, who was in kitchen, to hand over all their valuable belongings in the house," said Abu Kassim.
He added that, in an attempt to avoid getting slashed by one of the burglars, the victim tried to grab the machete but ended up injuring his left palm.
The burglars had fled the scene with valuables and jewelries worth RM20,000.
Though the victim was rushed to hospital, he was pronounced dead at around 6.40pm.
The body was sent to the Universiti Malaya Medical Centre and a post-mortem will be conducted to determine the cause of his death.
The manhunt for the suspects is ongoing and the case is being investigated under the Section 396 of the Penal Code for gang robbery and murder.
