Cashless payments system at Klang Valley highways by year-end

KUALA LUMPUR: All tolled highways in the Klang Valley will switch to a cashless payment system by year-end to boost efficiency at toll booths and ensure the comfort of highway users.
Association of Highway Concessionaires Malaysia president Datuk Zainudin A. Kadir said the fully electronic payment system to be implemented at 21 tolled highways will help to ease traffic congestion at the toll plazas. This number excludes inter-urban highways.
"It was recorded that 1,000 collections can be done electronically per-hour through the usage of Touch 'n Go or Smart Tags at tolled booths compared to an average of 360 collections done via manual cash transactions," he said during a media briefing yesterday.
During the briefing, Zainudin also announced that 10 toll plazas from four highways will implement the electronic toll payment system beginning 12 noon on Jan 13.
The four highways involved are the Maju Expressway (MEX), New Pantai Expressway (NPE), Cheras-Kajang Highway (Grand Saga) and Kemuning Shah Alam Expressway (LKSA).
The toll plazas are Salak Selatan (MEX), Putrajaya (MEX), Seri Kembangan (MEX), PJS2 (NPE), PJS5 (NPE), Pantai Dalam (NPE), Batu 9 (Grand Saga), Batu 11 (Grand Saga), Seri Muda (LKSA) and Alam Impian (LKSA).
The highways mentioned above are the second batch to implement the cashless payment system.
In September last year, the Ampang-Kuala Lumpur Elevated Highway (Akleh), Duta-Ulu Kelang Expressway (Duke) and Smart Tunnel Highway were among the first few highway concessionaires to implement the system in September last year.
The first batch of toll plazas to go fully electronic were the Datuk Keramat toll plaza (Akleh), Ayer Panas, Batu and Sentul Pasar (Duke) and Smart Highway toll plaza at Sungai Besi.
Zainudin said another four highways will go fully electronic in March and several more in June.
"Apart from giving out Touch 'n Go cards to road users and lower prices for the Smart Tag device, there will also be toll rebates of 5% for Class 1 vehicles for two months from Jan 13 until Mac 12 in which the rebate can be redeemed one month after the rebate period starts," said Zainudin, who is also the chief executive officer of Prolintas Sdn Bhd.
To provide convenience to users, he said there will be 24-hour top-up lanes made available at the toll plazas.
