GEORGE TOWN: Only temporary occupation license (TOL) holders of those staying at the Sandilands Foreshore area will be given compensation for having to move out for a project.

Pengkalan Kota assemblyman Lau Keng Ee said TOL holders will be given a low-medium-cost (LMC) unit in the affordable housing development.

He said 50 units were being evicted with 46 already agreeing to the compensation, another three refused while one more was pending the necessary documents.

"Each household which moves out is given a RM1,500 relocation fee and RM700 a month for rental until their homes are completed," he said at a press conference yesterday.

Lau was responding to complaints highlighted in the media over residents who complained they were not informed of the move to evict by end March and the lack of compensation.

The 1.7ha plot where 54 squatter homes are located has been earmarked for an affordable housing project comprising units priced between RM72,500 to RM400,000.

The project reportedly will have 482 medium-cost units, 321 low-medium cost units and commercial facilities with 150 units allocated for the squatter families.
