PETALING JAYA: The development process of the Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) system is almost complete, Road Transport Department (RTD) said today.
Its public relations officer Mohamad Sazali Baharudin said although the system is not expected to be announced until at least July or August this year, the department would be ready come its implementation.
"Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai, or his deputy, will make the official announcement when it is truly ready," he told theSun when contacted today.
Once implemented, foreign vehicles will have to get a radio-frequency identification card that would serve as a medium to record details of vehicle-owners, as well as to monitor overstaying foreigners and curb cloning of vehicles.
The system would also see foreign vehicles that are compounded in the country being barred from returning to their home countries, unless the summons are settled.
The first phase, set to be implemented in a few months time, will involve vehicles entering from Singapore, while phase two, slated later, will be for vehicles from Thailand.
"Phase three will be for vehicles from Brunei and Indonesia entering Sabah and Sarawak," Sazali added.
Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Ab Aziz Kaprawi had, on April 25 at the Dewan Negara, said the VEP system would see a RM20 charge per entry for each foreign vehicle.
