GEORGE TOWN: The father of a three-year-old girl who fell from an escalator of a shopping mall in Bukit Jambul on Sunday was trying to help his son whose finger was stuck on the escalator.
A statement by the Kompleks Bukit Jambul Joint Management Body (JMB) said the boy was playing with the escalator brush with a ballon stick according to close circuit television (CCTV) footage of the 6.40pm incident.
The statement said the boy tripped and got his finger stuck while the mother stumbled backward while trying to help.
The father panicked and while trying to help his wife and son, had forgotten his daughter was on his shoulder, causing the girl to fall down.
The statement said a medical practitioner who was shopping at that time administered CPR and managed to revive her before she was rushed to the hospital.
"Kompleks Bukit Jambul JMB would like to express our deepest sympathy to the family," the statement said.
The JMB urged all shoppers to comply with safety signages and requirements when using escalators
Northeast district police chief ACP Mior Faridalatrash Wahid said police have recorded the statement of the parents of the toddler as well as the doctor treating her.
"She is still not conscious but there is some movement of her fingers," he said in a brief statement.
