Police rescue woman held captive for 27 days in Batam

KULAI: A 30-year old woman who was held captive for 27 days at a house in a farm in Batam, Indonesia was rescued by the Malaysian police and brought home on Sunday.
Inspector-General of Police, Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar attributed their success to the cooperation rendered by their counterparts in Indonesia and Singapore.
He disclosed that the housewife was kidnapped from her house in Bandar Putra Kulai around 3.30am on Feb 21 and taken by the abductors to Batam and held captive at the farm.
"The woman looked very positive and she is safely back with her family," he told reporters after attending the Central Criminal Intelligent Unit workshop here yesterday.
Khalid revealed that the kidnappers took about two weeks before contacting her family for ransom.
"The family kept the incident under wrap. However, they gave full cooperation to the police that enabled us to rescue her safely," he said.
In the operation, he said, they arrested 12 suspects in Johor Baru while the Indonesian police another six in Batam. All suspects are aged between 18 - 30 years old.
It is learned that the abductors had taken the woman to Batam by boat and the family had paid them Singapore $3 million on March 13.
The 12 suspects arrested in Johor Baru are on remand for a week and the six suspects arrested by Indonesian police are to be handed over to Malaysia soon
Police said, the 12 suspects including had been remanded for a week, remain six suspects were be transferred to Malaysia soon.
