SERI ISKANDAR: Complementing each other since childhood is the secret behind the success of a pair of twins, Syed Amirul Alwi and Syed Amarul Adli Syed Mohd Zaki, 23, who completed their studies in the same field at the Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP).
The identical twins, who received their Bachelor of Chemical Engineering degrees, were among the 1,250 graduates who received their doctor of philosophy, masters and bachelors degrees in the fields of science; engineering and technology at the university's 17th convocation, here today.
The Terengganu-born twins who are the first and second of the five siblings said today's convocation was historic for them after five years of study.
"We were in the same class since kindergarten and university. We have never be separated. Almost every night we studied together with our friends.
"However, I (Syed Amirul Alwi) got a job first as an engineer with Petronas, while my brother (Syed Amarul Adli) is still waiting for job offers," he told Bernama at the UTP's 17th Convocation Ceremony, here today.
Earlier UTP pro-chancellor Tan Sri Sidek Hassan, in his speech said, graduates should always remember and practise the positive values that they have been inculcated with at the university.
"You (graduates) must always remember that in the workplace there will be many choices, to do what is right and doing what is wrong. Remember that we are accountable for our actions.
"As ambassadors of UTP, you carry our name and reputation. Make us, the family and our country proud," he said.
Meanwhile, UTP vice-chancellor Datuk Dr Abdul Rahim Hashim said over 90% of the university's academicians received research and development funds from various agencies and were appointed as the main researchers for research projects.
He said, in order to strengthen the university's high-impact research and development activities, six research institutions in the field of specialisation were established namely: Transport Infrastructure, Containment Management, Self Sustainable Building, Hydrocarbon Recovery, Health Analytics and Autonomous Systems.
"We hope the research institutions established will expand the high-impact research and development activities in generating new technologies for the benefits of society," he said.
Abdul Rahim also said the UTP Foundation has allocated RM7 million financial aid to 528 needy students and RM16 million scholarship to 108 eligible students. — Bernama
