GEORGE TOWN: Ornamental fish traders, shop owners and buyers are required to apply or renew their permits for the rearing and importation of cannibal fish within this two months to avoid legal action, said Penang Fisheries Department director, Nor Aishah Abu Bakar.
She said permits were required for as many as 34 species of cannibal and imported fish, among them the African catfish, piranhas, flower horn, red pomfret, arowana, aligator gar fish and the red-tailed catfish.
"Previously, permits were needed to rear ornamental fish but from now on we are taking firm action to ensure the ecosystem is protected from viruses and new diseases carried by these imported 34 species.
"As of July 3, action will be taken against traders, shop owners and buyers who fail to obtain a permit in accordance with the Fisheries (Prohibition of import, etc of Fish) Regulations (Amendment) 2011 which carries a maximum imprisonment of one year or a fine of up to RM1,000 or both upon conviction," she told reporters after an awareness campaign on permit application here today. — Bernama
