GEORGE TOWN: Police are looking into the possibility that a drug syndicate could have impersonated them in a bid to expand their drug trade here after they discovered four pistols and three sets of handcuffs during a raid at a hideout in Simpang Empat.
The weapons were uncovered during a routine anti-narcotics raid at an unnamed house in Taman Idaman on Wednesday where besides the firearms, police also found live ammunition, three packets of heroin weighing 573.9 grammes and two packets of ketamine weighing 26.7 grammes.
The drugs are valued at RM11,500 on the black market.
They also detained three occupants including a married couple, who were staying in the property.
Bukit Aman Narcotics Department director Datuk Seri Mohamed Salleh told a press conference here that the police would probe why the suspects have in their possession handcuffs as well as firearms.
"This is the interesting part of the bust. We need to check whether the firearms were for sale or for personal use. We are also suspicious why they kept the handcuffs."
The pistols were identified as Barreta, Colt MFG, Compact Cz 75D and Cz 2075.
A total of 151 bullets were found alongside with handcuffs and keys while investigators were ascertaining the origins of such dangerous weapons.
Salleh said the initial suspicions was the possibility that the suspects may have wanted to intimidate people by impersonating as cops.
Of the three suspects detained, Salleh said that one of them was a confirmed drug pusher in his 30s, who has prior records of stealing motorcycles, rioting. The suspect was also detained under the Prevention of Crime Act (Poca) 1959.
The other suspects were his wife and a 59-year-old godsister.
Police also seized a car, a motorcycle, a watch and RM1,700 in cash.
