KUALA LUMPUR: Transparency International-Malaysia (TI-M) today welcomed the directive by Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad that the Auditor-General's report on the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) scandal be declassified.
"Since 2016, TI-M had made numerous calls to declassify the OSA (Official Secrets Act) classified report and present it to the Parliament. This scandal has affected the image of our country and is one of the factors that caused our position to slide lower in TI's Corruption Perception Index. The 1MDB case has been called the mother of all scandals and we strongly feel it should be investigated further. Those involved in the scandal, regardless of their positions should be brought to justice and face the full wrath of the law." TI-M president Datuk Akhbar Satar told theSun.
Akhbar said investigations should not be merely confined to local witnesses but those overseas as well where the funds were suspected to be channelled.
He said the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) and police that are investigating respective areas of the scandal should use provisions of the law such as the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act to freeze and seize assets of those being investigated.
Akhbar added the probe should be carried out with fear or favour and there should not be any political interference.
