KUALA LUMPUR: Yinson GreenTech plans to expand its chargEV network to 800 charging points across all 14 states by the end of 2026, up from the current 645 charging points in 13 states, as it accelerates investments to support Malaysia’s fast-growing electric vehicle (EV) market.
The green technologies arm of Yinson Holdings Bhd also plans to increase its roaming partnerships from six to eight, enabling drivers to access a wider charging network through a single platform.
Managing director of EV charging and leasing Kelvin Soon said the expansion will focus on high-traffic destinations such as shopping malls, office buildings and the North-South Expressway, while extending coverage to underserved areas.
“We are looking at shopping malls, that’s a popular one. We are also putting chargers in underserved areas. The latest that we have done recently is Teluk Intan and Gemas,“ he told reporters after unveiling the refreshed chargEV 2.0 application today.
“We are going to also look at office buildings because that’s where we believe people can charge their vehicles while they work. But more importantly, all along the highway, especially the North-South Highway, we’re putting a lot of focus there as well. This year alone, we’re looking at another three to four more locations along the highway,“ he added.
The planned rollout represents an additional 205 charging points, or about 32%, by year-end.
Soon said the company remains bullish on the sector as Malaysia’s EV adoption continues to accelerate, citing 115,142 EV registrations in June 2026, an 85.1% increase from a year earlier.
“I think it’s growing, and it’s amazing. If you look at the first half of this year, we have almost doubled what we achieved last year. You look at June 2025 and compare it with today, it’s an 85% growth,“ he said.
“But this also means there are more EV users every day on the road. More EV users are trying to charge their cars, and that brings us to why we are here today. We need to solve the pain of charging.”
The growing EV population has translated into higher utilisation of the chargEV network, which has recorded nearly one million charging sessions since Yinson GreenTech partnered with Malaysian Green Technology and Climate Change Corporation (MGTC) to operate the network in 2022.
“I’m proud that over the last four years we have crossed almost one million charging sessions by all chargEV users and loyal customers,“ Soon said. “This million mark is very significant because it means there have been one million times that an EV user plugged in their car and trusted us to deliver energy to them.”
Soon said the milestone gives the company confidence that charging demand will continue to rise as more Malaysians switch to EVs and become increasingly comfortable using them for long-distance travel.
“It took us about four years to reach our first million charging sessions. I hope we can achieve the next million within the next two years,“ he said.
“The EV adoption has doubled year-on-year, and the potential to grow is definitely there. We can already see more people travelling on the highways when they go back to their hometowns. That gives us a lot of encouragement and confidence.”
To support the expected increase in demand, Yinson GreenTech has continued investing in infrastructure to improve network reliability and charging capacity.
Soon said the company deployed its first battery energy storage system at Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club in 2024 to overcome grid constraints, upgraded electricity infrastructure at Tangkak following strong utilisation, and formed a joint venture with PLUS Malaysia to develop charging hubs along the North-South Expressway.
“We have also invested further money this year to upgrade and stabilise the grid at Tangkak because it has become one of our most popular charging locations,“ he addeid.
The Seremban Highway charging hub is expected to begin operations in the second quarter of next year. More recently, the company partnered with Merdeka 118 to launch what it described as Kuala Lumpur’s largest AC charging hub.
While continuing to expand its charging footprint, Yinson GreenTech said the next phase of growth will focus on improving the user experience through the newly launched chargEV 2.0 application, which was developed over six to eight months using insights gathered from nearly one million charging sessions.
The upgraded application introduces features such as one-click charging, AutoCharge, improved charger discovery, live charging updates and a redesigned profile page aimed at making charging faster, simpler and more intuitive.
“This chargEV app is something that we have worked on over the last six to eight months, understanding every single EV user’s pain points, what their issues are, and how we make charging simple,“ Soon said.
The refreshed platform builds on chargEV’s evolution since its establishment by MGTC in 2015 before Yinson GreenTech partnered with the agency in 2022 to accelerate its expansion.
Today, users can access almost 5,000 charging points across Malaysia and Singapore through chargEV’s own network and its roaming partnerships.
“In the chargEV app today, you can see that we have almost 5,000 charging points across Singapore and Malaysia,“ Soon said.
