Anna Jenkins’ son wants case probed as criminal investigation

Gregory Jenkins lodges a police report after the High Court cited shortcomings in his mother’s death investigation.

GEORGE TOWN: The son of Australian national Anna Jenkins today lodged a police report following the High Court’s grounds of judgment highlighting shortcomings in the investigation into his mother’s disappearance and death.

Gregory Steven Jenkins said he wanted the police to continue their investigation by focusing on the possibility of kidnapping, wrongful detention and murder, rather than treating it solely as a missing-person case.

“I came from Australia today to lodge a police report following the Penang High Court’s grounds of judgment issued on May 4, which stated that the case was never investigated as a possible kidnapping, murder and wrongful detention, but was instead classified as a missing-person case.

“As a result, many matters were overlooked and left uninvestigated. We are therefore asking the police to continue investigating the case from the angles of kidnapping, murder and wrongful detention,” he told a press conference here today.

He said his family did not know the actual cause of Anna’s death but hoped further investigations would establish what had happened and identify those who might have been involved.

The High Court previously upheld an open verdict on Anna’s death after finding that the available evidence was insufficient to conclude that it was a homicide, but held that police investigations should continue comprehensively.

Anna was reported missing in December 2017 before her skeletal remains were discovered nearly three years later in an area near Jalan Batu Gantung here.
