Police say a non functional hand grenade and threatening note were found at a lumber factory in Sungai Petani
SUNGAI PETANI: A lumber factory in Bukit Selambau was thrown into alarm after an object resembling a hand grenade, along with a threatening note, was found outside the main entrance of the office building this morning.
Kuala Muda district police chief ACP Hanyan Ramlan said police rushed to the scene after receiving a report at 12.30pm today.
“We received a call from a female employee of the factory regarding the discovery of the object and a handwritten note believed to contain a threat.”
“We deployed the Bomb Disposal Unit (BDU) to the scene to investigate and found that the object resembled a hand grenade,” he told reporters.
He said the factory operates 24 hours a day, and the object was discovered by an employee at about 10am.
“The object resembles a hand grenade but was found to be non-functional, meaning it was not a complete device. The case is being investigated under Section 506 of the Penal Code, and we are probing it from all angles. We understand this is the first such threat received by the factory in the past 10 years,” he said.
Hanyan said investigations were ongoing and several witnesses would be called.
“From a visual inspection, it resembles a hand grenade, but we are conducting further investigations to determine what it is made of, whether wood or metal. The area where the object was placed was not covered by closed-circuit television (CCTV), and we will obtain further statements from witnesses.”
He added that the handwritten note in Malay, written in red ink and placed beside the object, contained a threat demanding that an operation be stopped.
“The note essentially demanded that operations be halted. What operation it was referring to is still under investigation. Some people may not view it as a threat, but from the management’s perspective, they may perceive it as one.”
