Sarawak’s Serian records unhealthy API reading of 153

Sarawak’s Serian recorded an unhealthy API reading of 153 as transboundary haze threatens the state.

KUCHING: Serian recorded an unhealthy Air Pollutant Index (API) reading of 153 as of 5 pm today, according to the Malaysian Air Pollutant Index Management System (APIMS) portal.

The Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB) Sarawak said ambient air quality in the state had shown an upward trend since July 10.

It said 11 areas recorded moderate API readings of between 51 and 100, namely Kuching, Samarahan, Sri Aman, Sarikei, Sibu, Mukah, Bintulu, Samalaju, Lundu, Tebedu and Lubok Antu.

NREB said the South-west Monsoon, which began on May 14 and is expected to continue until September, has brought persistent south-westerly winds across the country.

“This situation has the potential to cause transboundary haze and deteriorate ambient air quality in Sarawak. The state is likely to continue experiencing haze over the coming days if biomass burning increases outside its borders,” it said in a statement today.

NREB said it had activated its haze operations room, intensified field patrols, revoked existing controlled burning permits, suspended the issuance of new permits and issued open burning prohibition notices to all project developers.

It advised the public to drink plenty of water, reduce outdoor activities and wear face masks when outdoors, particularly those in high-risk groups. It also reminded the public not to carry out open burning, especially during the dry season.
