Ramadan in M’sia isn’t just an occasion, but a culture

Netizens say Malaysia’s unique Ramadan bazaars and unity make it a special destination for foreigners

MALAYSIA is widely known for its multicultural society and unique blend of traditions and netizens say this is especially evident during Ramadan.

On Threads, users shared that while Muslims around the world observe the fasting month, Malaysia stands out for its distinctive way of celebrating it.

User Shazzaqie said Malaysians should be grateful for the vibrant Ramadan culture here, from bustling Ramadan bazaars and mosque hopping to moreh gatherings and the distribution of bubur lambuk throughout the month.

He added that Westerners and Arabs are even willing to travel to Malaysia just to experience the atmosphere during Ramadan.

Echoing his view, Erna said fasting in Malaysia has become part of the national culture.

“People of all races experience it together. And it’s quite a vibe for foreigners to travel here to experience Ramadan,” she commented.

Another user, Aisya, noted that Ramadan often becomes content for non-Muslims online — but largely in a positive way.

She said such exposure helps foster unity and encourages better understanding of the diverse religious practices in Malaysia.

Irdina, who previously lived in an Arab country for several years, shared that while Ramadan is observed there, the bazaars are not as lively as those in Malaysia, as large-scale food sales are less common. However, she noted that the Hajj festival is particularly vibrant there.

Another netizen suggested that Malaysia’s wide variety of food — often described as unbeatable in taste — makes iftar especially meaningful, turning it into a shared experience not only for Muslims, but for Malaysians of all backgrounds.
