“RM12 too much?” – Woman questions late-night delivery fee, netizens fire back

A woman’s complaint about a RM12 late-night delivery fee for sahur sparks heated debate online, with many Malaysians defending riders and highlighting midnight surcharges, safety risks and convenience costs.

A woman has sparked debate online after expressing her frustration over a late-night delivery charge, saying it spoiled her mood for sahur.

In her Threads post, @dizzygirl____ wrote, “Even at night the delivery is RM12??? It really makes me lose the mood to have sahur if it’s like this.”

However, instead of sympathy, many Malaysians rushed to defend the riders, pointing out the risks and sacrifices involved in working late-night shifts.

havnoheart commented, “RM12 is not too much. There are not many riders willing to take night jobs and riding a motorbike at night is dangerous, there are many criminals. They have to go around looking for your house, maybe through dark roads, and wait at quiet shops. If you want it cheaper, you can go to the shop yourself or just have instant noodles for sahur. Think about others too.”

Others stressed that customers are paying for convenience.

airdrenna wrote, “Sis, if you follow pure logic, the price makes sense. You yourself don’t want to go out at 4–5am to buy your own food, but someone else is willing to wake up early, drive in the dark and deliver to your door — of course the price is higher. Early morning usually has a surcharge and fewer riders. You’re not just paying for the food, you’re paying for the convenience and their effort.”

“Clinics charge higher rates at night. Taxis have midnight surcharges. I think it’s reasonable for riders to get a midnight surcharge too,” m_syafiqkamis added.

Some also highlighted rider shortages.

aqeyll_ explained, “Not all riders want to work after 12am. My order was once cancelled because there was no rider. I’m also a vendor on online platforms. Orders have been cancelled by the system because there was no rider for almost an hour. That’s why I close at 11pm now.”

While many defended the charges, a few offered practical advice.

atinlisya_ wrote, “It’s simple sis, cooking. If you’re too lazy, just buy sambal and fry eggs. You’ll be full and save money.”

nrfrjanaa_ shared a more positive take: “Sometimes I just order because it’s late. Alhamdulillah the rider is willing to pick up my order when I’m hungry. Sometimes I even give tips.”
