A Malaysian woman compares local and foreign managers, saying overseas bosses feel more inclusive, sparking mixed reactions online.

A Malaysian woman recently compared her working experiences with Malaysian and foreign managers, claiming that her compatriots are “unfriendly”.

Taking to Threads, she recalled her stint at a multinational company, noting that Malaysian managers “never really felt like part of the team”. In contrast, she praised her current experience in Australia, commending her manager’s hands-on attitude.

“The managers would actually roll up their sleeves and work alongside other staff. Not only that, they ask for our opinions in a way that feels more like teamwork.

“How I wish Malaysian managers could have this attitude,” she said.

Netizens were divided over the woman’s remarks, with some arguing that management style depends more on individual attitude than nationality. However, others echoed her sentiments.

“Yes, foreign colleagues and managers are different. Their work style is very different, and it makes you feel included rather than stuck in a hierarchy. They also value work-life balance, and weekends are strictly personal,” one user explained.

“As someone who has had experience with both American and Malaysian managers, I can vouch for this. It’s a totally different culture, and honestly, I prefer working with Americans any day,” another claimed.

Some users, however, pointed out that working with foreign managers can be a “hit or miss” experience.

“My experience is the opposite. I’ve worked with Malaysian, American, Italian and Irish bosses. The Malaysian ones were superb — they got their hands dirty with us. The foreigners were hit or miss. Some were good, while others stayed too ‘high level’ and never really dived into issues with us,” another commented.
