Untying knot: Why divorce isn’t necessarily a bad thing

Calling it quits and divorcing before marriage turns sour

DIVORCE is often treated as proof that two people failed at marriage. It carries assumptions of broken promises, damaged families and couples who did not try hard enough. People who separate may be judged for leaving, even when those outside the relationship know little about what happened inside it.

The judgment begins with the belief that keeping a marriage intact is always the best outcome. It overlooks a more relevant question: is the marriage itself still good?

Divorce does not necessarily mean that a happy and functioning marriage has ended. More often, it means a marriage affected by conflict, neglect, betrayal, incompatibility or abuse has finally reached its conclusion. The ending may be painful but pain alone does not prove the relationship should have continued.

Constant arguments can turn the home into a tense place. Divorce
Constant arguments can turn the home into a tense place.

Malaysia recorded 60,457 divorces in 2024, up from 58,095 in 2023, according to the Department of Statistics Malaysia. The crude divorce rate also increased from 1.7 to 1.8 divorces per 1,000 people.

These figures show how many marriages formally ended but they cannot show what happened before each case reached the legal system. Statistics do not count years of hostility, failed reconciliation attempts, financial control, emotional neglect or repeated promises that were never kept.

Staying married is not always a success

A successful marriage cannot be measured only by its duration. Remaining legally married for 20 or 30 years means little if the relationship has become unsafe, humiliating or emotionally empty.

Some couples remain together because of social pressure, financial dependence, family expectations or fear of being judged. Others stay for their children while the household becomes dominated by arguments, resentment or silence.

Preserving the marriage may protect its appearance without improving life for anyone inside it.

This does not mean divorce should follow every disagreement. Marriage requires patience, compromise and the ability to have difficult conversations. Counselling may help couples understand recurring problems, rebuild trust and decide whether the relationship can be repaired.

However, reconciliation requires effort from both spouses. One person cannot repair a marriage while the other continues lying, threatening, controlling or refusing to address harmful behaviour.

Children experience the marriage too

Children are often given as the main reason couples should remain together. Divorce can certainly disrupt their routines, finances and relationships with their parents.

A hostile separation can make the situation worse, particularly when children are used as messengers or placed between two angry adults.

Yet children are also affected by the marriage they witness every day. They learn about relationships by watching how their parents communicate, manage anger and treat one another.

A home filled with shouting, intimidation or constant coldness is not automatically stable simply because both parents remain married.

Separated parents can continue raising their children responsibly. They can maintain clear routines, provide financial support and avoid turning disagreements into battles that involve the child. Divorce ends the marriage between two adults, not their responsibilities as parents.

Ending further damage

The median age at divorce in Malaysia in 2024 was 38 for men and 36 for women. At those ages, separation can affect housing, savings, careers, children and extended families. Few people go through it without loss.

Divorce should therefore be approached seriously. Legal advice, emotional support and careful financial planning may be necessary. It should not be presented as an easy escape from ordinary marital difficulties.

It also should not be treated as automatic evidence of personal failure. Sometimes the relationship had already failed long before the papers were filed.

A good marriage ending is tragic. A bad marriage ending may prevent years of further harm.
