Varsity student council organises Deepavali activities to bring joy to underprivileged

KEDAH: Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM)’s student representative council has illuminated the true meaning of the “Festival of Lights” by organising “Aram Sei Deepavali”, a charity event that has left an indelible mark on the local community.

In a display of compassion and unity, administrative secretary of the council Khausalya Chandran spearheaded a mission to make Deepavali brighter for those in need.

“This awe-inspiring event surpassed its objective by bringing joy to the underprivileged and also fostering volunteerism and community development among the university students.

“The vision of this event was to serve the local community, assist university students from the B40 category, and bring smiles to the faces of underprivileged children in our area.

“With the support and dedicated efforts from volunteers, the organising team reached out to different segments of the community, providing essential items such as food baskets and financial aid to children and students.”

Khausalya said they were able to provide food baskets and a generous donation of RM150 each to support 15 underprivileged children from Jitra, Napoh, Changlun, Sungai Petani and Bukit Kayu Hitam, to help them enjoy Deepavali.

“We donated RM2,000 to UUM students from the B40 category, offering them financial relief and the chance to celebrate Deepavali
with joy.”

Khausalya said a RM500 donation was also made to the Arulmigu Sri Murugan Temple in Jitra, with volunteers taking the initiative to clean and beautify the premises.

“For the efforts of the 51 volunteers from the B40 family, they were rewarded with RM50 each. The volunteers dedicated their time, creating unforgettable memories and spreading happiness.

“Our team believes the ‘Aram Sei Deepavali’ serves as a testament to the power of community, unity and kindness.

“This event showcases how a dedicated group of individuals can make a lasting impact and a legacy of love and service. It reminds us that Deepavali is not just a festival of lights but a celebration of giving, compassion and hope.”

She also emphasised the importance of student representative councils committing to improving the lives of the underprivileged and becoming role models for volunteerism in communities nationwide.
