SEPANG: The Libyan student who was arrested in connection with a hit-and-run case at Cyberjaya was charged with murder at the magistrate’s court today.
Ahmed Abdullah Ali, who appeared before magistrate Yusna Khadijah Md Yusop, was charged with the murder of assistant manager Wan Amirah Wan Alias, who succumbed to her injuries.
No plea was recorded from the accused and the case has been fixed for mention on Dec 7.
The accused was charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder, which provides for the mandatory death sentence upon conviction.
The accused was driving a silver Hyundai that crashed into Wan Amirah on Oct 17.
He was represented by lawyers Mohd Redzuan Mohamed Yusoff and Nur Siti Fairuz Roslan, while the prosecution was conducted by deputy public prosecutor Aziatul Afrizan Alias.
He was also charged at the sessions court under Section 15 (1) a of the Dangerous Drug Act 1952 for drug offences.
Ahmed claimed trial to the drug charge, and if found guilty he can be imprisoned for two years or fined.
He also pleaded not guilty to voluntarily causing injuries to another Libyan student Basel Giumala A El Maarfi, 20, using a long knife af Hyve Soho Suite, Jalan Impact, Cyber 6, Cyberjaya, on Aug 30 at 4.45am.
He was charged under Section 326 of the Penal Code which provides for a maximum imprisonment of 20 years, whipping or fine.
Earlier, deputy public prosecutor S. Abirami did not offer bail as the victim had suffered severe injuries and the accused is a foreigner with a flight risk.
However, his lawyer Dinesh Muttal pleaded for bail as his client is supposed to sit for his final examinations soon.
Court denied bail and set Dec 7 for mention.
The recording taken from a closed-circuit security camera showed the driver steering the vehicle dangerously at a carpark opposite a row of shophouses, recklessly swerving and crashing into two cars.
Wan Amirah crossed the road at the time when the driver crashed into her at high speed. In a bid to escape, the driver swerved the car, dragging the victim before running over her.
The suspect fled the scene and went into hiding before he was tracked down by police.
