KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia now has another month to decide whether or not to proceed with the Rapid Transit System (RTS) linking Johor Baru to Singapore.

“Malaysia and Singapore have agreed to extend the deadline to Oct 31 without addition cost,” the Transport Ministry said in a statement today.

This is the second extension. In March, Singapore agreed to a six-month extension to September for Malaysia to review the project.

A bilateral agreement on the RTS was signed in January 2018, when Barisan Nasional was the ruling government.

The 4km line will link Bukit Chagar in Johor Baru with Woodlands in Singapore. It will have a capacity to ferry 10,000 passengers an hour.

The objective was to ease the congestion in the daily commute between the two countries.

Work was initially scheduled to begin this year and to be completed by December 2024.
