KUCHING: The Sarawak government will set up internet centres in Local Authority (PBT) and Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK) areas to enhance the effectiveness of their services to the public.
Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg said the move was in line with the aspiration to further expand the use of digital technology, especially among PBTs in their service delivery.
“I know that in Miri and Kuching, the local authorities are already using (digital) technology in providing services to their respective communities and I want other local councils to do the same,” he said in his message at the swearing-in ceremony for the reappointment of local councillors which was held online here today.
Sarawak has made history when 758 members from 24 PBTs throughout the state took their oath of office virtually today, led by Miri mayor Adam Yii.
Abang Johari said the next challenge facing the Sarawak government was to ensure that its people remain resilient and adapting to the new norms in order to boost the state economic growth and development.
“I have presented the Sarawak Agenda yesterday with a recommendation to focus on several key points of the Post-Covid-19 Development Strategy 2030, which aims at ensuring that Sarawak will have an innovative society,” he said.
Abang Johari explained that the development strategy with programmes and projects to be implemented under the 12th Malaysia Plan was to revive the state economy which has been badly impacted by Covid-19 and every PBT were required to play an important role in the recovery effort.
“Local councillors need to convey and explain the state government’s plan to all levels of society on the post-Covid-19 development agenda in order to take Sarawak to greater heights for the sake of future generations,” he said.
The chief minister added that all PBT members also have to exercise a high level of integrity to assist Sarawak in achieving herd immunity in the ongoing immunisation programme to allow more focus to be given to the state development agenda. — Bernama
