Some 110 victims from 29 families affected by the Kampung Gok Kapur fire have been placed at a temporary relief centre, says JKM.

KOTA BHARU: Some 110 victims from 29 families, affected by yesterday’s fire that razed their homes in Kampung Gok Kapur, here, have been placed at a temporary relief centre at Masjid Mukim Banggol, Jalan Pantai Cahaya Bulan.

Kelantan Social Welfare Department (JKM) director Che Samsuzuki Che Noh said the relief centre was opened at 6.30 pm to accommodate the affected victims, with registration completed by 11 pm.

He said that of the total victims recorded, three were persons with disabilities, involving 29 heads of households.

“We were told that yesterday’s fire resulted in the complete destruction of 29 houses, making it one of the largest fire incidents in Kelantan.

“Kelantan JKM extends its condolences to all the victims and hopes they will be given strength and perseverance in facing this ordeal,” he told reporters after visiting the scene today.

Che Samsuzuki said Kelantan JKM took swift action by distributing emergency aid kits to all victims at the relief centre to meet their basic needs.

In addition, he said assistance through the JKM Welfare Fund would be distributed to all victims to help ease their burden following the loss of their homes and property in the fire.

He said JKM personnel were also stationed at the relief centre to provide counselling services to victims who were experiencing trauma and stress due to the incident.

“We will ensure that all the needs of the victims, including food and drink as well as child welfare, continue to be given attention,” he said.

He also expressed his appreciation to government agencies, security forces, volunteers and members of the public who came forward to assist throughout the evacuation operation and the management of victims at the relief centre.

A total of 27 houses were destroyed in yesterday’s fire in Kampung Gok Kapur, with authorities still investigating the cause of the incident and a fire forensic team conducting detailed examinations at the scene.
