World No. 118 duo Jimmy Wong and Cheng Su Yin upset the world No. 6 French pair to reach the Japan Open quarter-finals.

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia’s mixed doubles pair Jimmy Wong and Cheng Su Yin pulled off a major upset to reach the quarter-finals of the 2026 Japan Open after defeating tournament sixth seeds Thom Gicquel and Delphine Delrue of France at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium today.

The world No. 118 pair produced an energetic display to oust the world No. 6 duo in straight sets, 23-21, 24-22, in 53 minutes.

Jimmy and Su Yin are scheduled to face either South Korea’s Kim Jae Hyeon and Jang Ha Jeong or Denmark’s Mathias Christiansen and Alexandra Boje in the quarter-finals.

Meanwhile, Malaysia’s men’s singles challenge came to an end after Leong Jun Hao was eliminated in the second round, losing to France’s fifth seed Christo Popov 21-16, 11-21, 17-21.

Also exiting in the second round were Malaysia’s mixed doubles pair Goh Soon Huat and Shevon Lai Jemie, who went down 14-21, 7-21 to China’s Jiang Zhen Bang and Wei Ya Xin.
