Elderly woman dies in Kota Bharu house fire

An 89-year-old woman perished after her temporary home was almost completely destroyed in a fire near Jalan Tok Guru, Kota Bharu

KOTA BHARU: An 89-year-old woman died after her home was almost completely destroyed in a fire near Jalan Tok Guru here.

Kota Bharu Fire and Rescue Station operations commander Satyuti Satar said they received an emergency call via the NG999 System at 5.58pm before dispatching a team to the scene.

Fire engines arrived at 6.01pm with 27 personnel and found the fire involved a temporary house measuring about 5×5 metres, with an estimated 98% destruction.

“The fire resulted in one female victim being confirmed dead at the scene,” he told reporters.

Satyuti said they also sought assistance from a nearby fire station to ensure the blaze was quickly controlled.

The cause of the fire and estimated losses are still under investigation.

A witness, Anis Sutrliati Mohamad, 46, said she was having afternoon tea with her cousin at a house about 20 metres away when the incident occurred.

She said she heard a sound like a falling object before seeing the victim waving her hands and screaming for help.

“The fire was blazing at that time and I saw the victim fall to the lower part of the house. I couldn’t help because the heat was too intense and immediately contacted the fire department,” said Anis, who had known the victim for a long time.

She added that the elderly woman was frail and had difficulty walking and seeing clearly.

Kota Bharu district police chief ACP Mohd Azmir Damiri confirmed the incident, stating the case has been classified as sudden death.
