Police detain man after firecracker blast injures seven in Pendang

A 21-year-old man is detained after a firecracker explosion injured seven people, including himself, in a village in Pendang, Kedah

ALOR SETAR: Police have detained a 21-year-old local man suspected of playing with firecrackers, leading to an explosion that injured seven people, including himself.

The incident occurred in Tobiar, Pendang, last Friday.

Pendang District Police Chief Supt Rodzi Abu Hassan said the suspect was arrested after police received information about the incident around 10 am on Monday.

Initial investigations revealed the suspect admitted to playing with firecrackers with six relatives in preparation for Hari Raya Aidilfitri.

“During the incident, a lit firecracker is believed to have entered a plastic bag containing other firecrackers, causing a strong explosion,” he said in a statement.

The explosion injured six individuals aged between 11 and 20 who were near the location.

All victims, including the suspect, sustained injuries to their faces and bodies and received outpatient treatment at Pendang Hospital.

One victim was referred to Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital for further treatment after suffering a serious eye injury.

The suspect will be remanded to assist investigations under Section 337 of the Penal Code.

Earlier, several photos of injured individuals circulated on Facebook with captions claiming a “bomb expert tragedy” in Tobiar, Pendang.
