Elderly disabled man found dead in Perak canal after suspected fall

A 77-year-old man with a prosthetic leg was found dead in a Perak canal, his wheelchair discovered at the water’s edge, fire department says.

HUTAN MELINTANG: An elderly disabled man was found dead in a canal this morning after a suspected fall from his wheelchair.

The Perak Fire and Rescue Department said the 77-year-old local man, who had a prosthetic leg, was discovered in the water along Jalan Kampung Sungai Tiang Baru near Selekoh.

Acting assistant director of operations Shazlean Mohd Hanafiah said the victim was found floating under the Sungai Tiang bridge at about 8.40 am.

He was located roughly two metres from where he is believed to have entered the water.

Firefighters arriving at 8.13 am found the man’s wheelchair at the edge of the drain, prompting the suspicion he had fallen in.

The victim was retrieved from the canal by the fire and rescue team.

A medical team later confirmed the man dead at the scene.
