Indian PM Modi arrives in Malaysia for official visit

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi begins a two-day official visit to Malaysia, set to enhance bilateral ties under the new Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

SEPANG: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has arrived in Malaysia for a two-day official visit at the invitation of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

His aircraft landed at the Bunga Raya Complex, Kuala Lumpur International Airport at 4.40 pm, where he was greeted by Anwar.

Modi then inspected a guard of honour mounted by personnel from the First Battalion of the Royal Malay Regiment.

His arrival was marked by cultural performances reflecting Malaysia’s diversity, including a MADANI drumming performance and a dance showcase.

Modi and Anwar then proceeded to a community event at the Mines International Exhibition and Convention Centre.

This visit reciprocates Anwar’s official trip to India in August 2024.

It also marks Modi’s third visit to Malaysia and his first since both nations elevated ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership that same month.

The visit is expected to deepen cooperation in areas of mutual benefit.

According to Wisma Putra, Modi is scheduled to hold bilateral talks with Anwar tomorrow.

The leaders will review the CSP’s implementation and chart new directions for cooperation.

Discussions will focus on trade, investment, defence, security, labour, tourism, and education.

They will also witness the exchange of numerous agreements and cooperation documents.

These include Memoranda of Understanding on combating corruption and disaster management.

Other documents cover cooperation in labour, semiconductors, healthcare, and vocational training.

Both leaders will witness the Exchange of Letters on United Nations peacekeeping cooperation.

They will also see the submission of the Framework Agreement on the International Big Cats Alliance.

India and Malaysia share longstanding historical and cultural ties.

This is underpinned by a strong Indian diaspora community of about 2.9 million in Malaysia.

Malaysia-India economic ties show strong momentum with total bilateral trade reaching RM79.49 billion in 2025.

Malaysia’s exports amounted to RM52.3 billion, while imports totalled RM27.19 billion.

Key Malaysian exports include palm oil and electrical products.

Main imports from India consist of agricultural, petroleum, and chemical products.
