The Youth and Sports Ministry aims to recruit 7,500 young volunteers for its Rakan Bumi 2026 programme to foster a generation of environmental change agents.

THE Youth and Sports Ministry (KBS) is targeting 7,500 young volunteers nationwide for its Rakan Bumi 2026 environmental programme.

This initiative is a key part of the Mega Rakan Muda 2026 Calendar, designed to mobilise youth through high-impact volunteerism.

Minister Dr Mohammed Taufiq Johari said the programme focuses on environmental protection, conservation and sustainability. He launched the national-level event, dubbed Projek Planet, at Pulau Redang Marine Park.

The launch involved activities like beach clean-ups, tree planting and marine conservation efforts. Mohammed Taufiq stated the objective is to ensure youths take responsibility for the nation’s future.

“The main objective is to ensure youths take responsibility and contribute to the nation’s future, while fostering love for the environment,” he told reporters. He thanked NGOs, strategic partners and the Natural Resources Ministry for their support.

He noted that hot weather did not disrupt proceedings due to health precautions. Medical standby teams and continuous monitoring were in place for participant safety.

“I am happy to see youths taking part voluntarily,” he added. He expressed hope these pioneers would encourage more young people to join the national effort.

In a statement, KBS said the programme is open to youths from all backgrounds. It aims to recruit those interested in environmental preservation and becoming societal change agents.

The ministry invited the public to visit its official website or follow state Youth Department social media for details. It hopes the initiative becomes a high-impact national model for youth sustainability.

KBS ultimately aims to produce a progressive, responsible and environmentally conscious generation. The programme will be expanded to other states following the Terengganu launch.
