Kelantan crime index falls 7.6% from January to June 2026, with violent crime down 17.9% and drug offences also declining.
KOTA BHARU: The crime index in Kelantan recorded a 7.6% decrease for the period from January to June this year, with 891 cases compared to 964 cases in the same period last year.
Kelantan police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat said the reduction of 73 cases proves that the strategies, commitment, and continuous actions implemented by the Kelantan police contingent are on the right track.
“By breakdown, violent crime decreased from 246 cases to 202 cases, a reduction of 44 cases or 17.9%.
“However, this decline is not a reason for us to feel complacent, but rather a catalyst to continue enhancing our efforts because what we are striving for is not just a decrease in numbers, but the safety, well-being, and confidence of the community towards the PDRM (Royal Malaysia Police),” he said.
He said this at a press conference after the Kelantan contingent police headquarters’ monthly assembly here today.
Mohd Yusoff said that for the same period, drug-related crimes also decreased by 13% to 12,051 cases compared to 13,957 cases last year, while the arrest of drug offenders decreased by 10% to 13,182 people compared to 14,640 people.
However, he said the value of drug seizures increased by 17% to RM15.7 million compared to RM13.37 million previously, indicating that enforcement actions are becoming more effective in curbing drug distribution and smuggling activities.
Meanwhile, the Kelantan police contingent will change their approach in tackling illegal racing by holding meetings with the parents of the riders involved.
Mohd Yusoff said the measure was taken after enforcement operations, summonses, and motorcycle seizures were found to still fail to curb the activity.
According to him, operations to crack down on illegal racing are conducted almost every week in several locations, including the Kota Bharu-Kuala Krai Highway near Chicha.
“We conduct operations every week, seize motorcycles and issue summonses, but the following week they return to race.
“I think it’s time we meet their parents to raise awareness because the current approach is seen as less effective,” he also said.
