MMEA intensifies patrols to curb smuggling during Ramadan

Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency boosts Op Pagar Laut patrols in Melaka and Negeri Sembilan waters to prevent smuggling and illegal immigration.

MELAKA: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency has intensified patrols under Op Khas Pagar Laut to curb smuggling and illegal immigration.

The operation focuses on high-risk areas in the waters from Kuala Kesang to Kuala Sepang during Ramadan and Syawal.

Melaka and Negeri Sembilan MMEA deputy operations director Maritime Commander Norrimi Hassan said the period is often exploited for illegal activities.

“The operation is a proactive measure to enhance enforcement levels and curb cross-border crime,” he told reporters.

The operation runs from February 27 to April 10 and is divided into four main phases.

These are the Preparation, Pre-Festive Enforcement, Festive Enforcement, and Monitoring and Post Exercise Debrief phases.

Norrimi said the operation ensures maritime security remains at an optimum level.

This is achieved through continuous patrols, strategic monitoring and enhanced enforcement.

He called on the maritime community and public to report any suspicious activities.

“Cooperation from all parties is crucial to ensure that the nation’s waters remain safe,” he said.
