A medical lab officer pleads not guilty to attempting to murder his ex-girlfriend by dousing her in petrol and setting her car on fire.

KAJANG: A medical laboratory officer pleaded not guilty at the Sessions Court here to charges of attempted murder and committing mischief by fire against his former girlfriend.

S Parthiban, 43, faces one count under Section 307 of the Penal Code for allegedly pouring petrol over his 43-year-old former partner, an offence carrying a maximum penalty of 10 years’ imprisonment and a fine.

The widowed father of one also faces a charge under Section 435 of the Penal Code for allegedly setting fire to the woman’s vehicle using petrol, an offence carrying a maximum penalty of 14 years’ imprisonment and a fine.

The alleged offences took place at a residence in Bandar Teknologi Kajang, Hulu Langat, at approximately 3.20 pm on Jan 30.

Deputy public prosecutor Nurul Izzah Shaharuddin did not offer bail, as attempted murder is a non-bailable offence.

She requested a substantial bail sum of approximately RM10,000 per charge if the court was inclined to grant it.

The prosecution also requested conditions including the surrender of the accused’s passport and a non-interference order regarding the victim and witnesses.

Parthiban, who was unrepresented, requested a reduced bail amount, saying he was the sole guardian of his nine-year-old daughter.

Judge Khainur Aleeza Ismail granted bail at RM16,000 for both charges with one surety and imposed the prosecution’s requested conditions.

The judge scheduled the next mention of the case for April 10.
