Penang police investigate Facebook post on temple gathering

Penang police probe Facebook post by preacher Zamri Vinoth over a planned gathering near a hospital temple, investigating under sedition and communications laws.

GEORGE TOWN: Penang police have launched an investigation into a Facebook post by preacher Zamri Vinoth regarding a planned gathering.

The post allegedly expressed support for a gathering involving a small Hindu temple near the entrance of Bukit Mertajam Hospital scheduled for Saturday.

State police chief Datuk Azizee Ismail (pic) confirmed a report was lodged by Jelutong MP RSN Rayer yesterday.

An investigation paper has been opened under Section 505(c) of the Penal Code and Section 233(1) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

Azizee urged the public not to spread unverified information with provocative elements.

He also advised against making speculation that could incite ill intent and racial hostility in the country.

The public was further advised not to participate in or organise any disruptive gatherings.

Police are closely monitoring the situation and will take firm action against any lawbreakers.

Rayer, who is also chairman of the Penang Hindu Endowments Board, lodged the report at the Northeast District Police Headquarters.

The report was made following Zamri Vinoth’s alleged Facebook post supporting the gathering.
