Sandakan fire displaces over 1,000 residents to relief centres

Over 1,000 residents from Kampung Bahagia are now housed in six relief centres after a massive fire destroyed their water village homes in Sandakan.

KOTA KINABALU: A total of 1,048 people from 224 families affected by the fire in Kampung Bahagia, Sandakan, have been placed at six relief centres (PPS) as of noon today.

The Sabah State Disaster Management Committee (JPBN) Secretariat said the victims were being housed at Batu Sapi PPR hall, Sekolah Kebangsaan Gas hall, Sekolah Kebangsaan Kampung Bahagia hall, Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Batu Sapi, Sibuga hall and Sekolah Kebangsaan Karamunting.

“All the PPS were opened on Sunday. Two additional PPS, namely at Dewan Serbaguna Warga Tua and Sekolah Menengah Jenis Kebangsaan Tiong Hwa, which were opened yesterday, are in the process of updating data,” it said in a statement.

A fire on Sunday at the Kampung Bahagia water village in Sandakan destroyed approximately 1,000 homes across an area of more than four hectares.
