Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah urges the Selangor government to seek Dutch expertise for a sustainable flood solution, criticising the lack of effective results from annual allocations
SHAH ALAM: The Sultan of Selangor has issued a strong call for the state government to urgently prioritise resolving chronic flood issues. Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah demanded more effective and immediate action through comprehensive planning.
He revealed he had repeatedly advised the government to seek expertise from international specialists, particularly from the Netherlands. The Ruler said this was to develop sustainable solutions to the long-standing problem.
“The flood issue is something I have raised dozens of times. Unfortunately, my advice has not been taken seriously…it is like pouring water on a yam leaf,” he said in his royal address.
He added that although allocations are made every year, no effective results are visible. Flooding continues to occur in several areas, especially residential zones, causing hardship to his people.
Sultan Sharafuddin also called for the cleaning of the Klang River to ensure a sustainable supply of clean water. He stressed he would not tire of calling for action until these problems are resolved.
His Royal Highness proposed greater focus on developing the waste-to-energy industry. He described this as a key sector for addressing waste management and sustainable energy challenges.
The Ruler additionally called for a more systematic approach to tackling potholes. This persistent issue continues to affect road users across the state.
Touching on pig farming, Sultan Sharafuddin reiterated that such activities are unsuitable in Selangor. He cited land constraints, proximity to densely populated Muslim areas, and pollution concerns.
“Despite this, there are still parties who refuse to comply with my directive,” he said. He suggested that pork supply for non-Muslims could instead be sourced from other regions, including Sarawak.
Meanwhile, the Sultan advised political leaders to set aside differences and work together. He urged this especially amid current economic uncertainties for the benefit of the people.
“Lately, I see too much politicking. This confuses the rakyat and can lead to division,” he stated. He called for responsibilities to be fulfilled with trust, honesty and sincerity to ensure Selangor’s continued progress.
