Perak JPJ pilots body cameras to boost transparency in enforcement

Perak JPJ deploys body-worn cameras on officers to record interactions, aiming to protect both the public and staff from false allegations.

IPOH: The Perak Road Transport Department (JPJ) has begun a pilot phase using body-worn cameras on its enforcement officers.

A total of 14 camera units have been distributed, with eight at the Ipoh branch, four in Taiping, and two at the Kuala Kangsar station.

Perak JPJ deputy director Mohd Azmi Jaafar said the devices have been in use since November to record all interactions with road users.

“The purpose of using BWCs is to record all interactions between enforcement officers and road users,” he said.

He stated the recordings protect the public’s rights and also safeguard officers from misunderstandings and unfounded accusations.

Mohd Azmi spoke after a special operation targeting nine major traffic offences along Jalan Kuala Kangsar – Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah.

He explained that a monitoring team at JPJ headquarters watches the camera feeds in real-time.

Any complaints from road users will receive immediate attention according to standard procedures.

Officers cannot arbitrarily switch off the devices during duty hours.

They may only be turned off after shifts or in specific sensitive areas as per the SOP.

The monitoring system will detect if a camera is switched off without a valid reason.

Mohd Azmi added that the cameras are not just for roadblock operations.

Their use also extends to JPJ service counters, vehicle inspection centres, and driving institutes.

This allows for the monitoring of interactions with customers and driving test candidates.
