EC advises early nomination checks for Sabah by-elections

The Election Commission urges candidates for the Kinabatangan and Lamag by-elections to verify nomination papers and pay deposits in advance.

KINABATANGAN: The Election Commission has advised prospective candidates for two Sabah by-elections to conduct early checks on their nomination papers.

EC secretary Datuk Khairul Shahril Idrus said checks can be done at the office of the Election Returning Officer or the Sabah State Election Office before nomination day this Saturday.

He also encouraged candidates to make their deposit payments in advance.

“The payment receipt must be brought on nomination day as proof of payment,” he said in a statement.

Nomination papers must be submitted between 9 am and 10 am at the Dewan Sri Lamag nomination centre.

Prospective candidates representing political parties must also submit a letter authorising the use of the party symbol.

Candidates who have paid the election campaign material deposit are subject to the Election Offences Act 1954 and local authority by-laws.

“The EC calls on all prospective candidates and political parties involved to comply at all times with the laws, regulations, codes of ethics and directives issued by the EC, local authorities and the Royal Malaysia Police,” Khairul Shahril said.

This compliance is to ensure the nomination process proceeds smoothly and in an orderly manner.

The by-elections for the Kinabatangan parliamentary seat and the Lamag state seat are being held following the death of incumbent Datuk Seri Bung Mokhtar Radin.

Polling for both by-elections is set for January 24, with early voting on January 20.

The electoral roll comprises 48,722 voters, consisting of 48,526 ordinary voters and 196 early voters.

The by-elections will involve 36 regular polling centres with 117 channels and one early voting centre.
