GRS candidate Hazem Mubarak Musa seeks to continue his father’s development legacy in Sungai Manila while maintaining political independence from his father’s role.
SANDAKAN: Gabungan Rakyat Sabah’s (GRS) candidate for the Sungai Manila state seat, Hazem Mubarak Musa, hopes to carry on his father’s legacy of driving continuous development in the constituency if given the mandate in the upcoming 17th Sabah State Election.
The son of Sabah Yang Dipertua Negeri Tun Musa Aman said his decision to enter politics was not based solely on his family background but was driven by his commitment to contribute to the constituency’s development and safeguard the well-being of its people.
“Of course, I want to continue my family’s legacy, but what matters more to me is playing a role in developing the community and contributing to the well-being of the people of Sungai Manila,” he said during a meet-and-greet programme in Sungai Manila.

He said that during his three years as Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah’s (Gagasan Rakyat) Sungai Manila Division chief, he and his team have frequently gone to the ground to support the community and listen to the concerns of the people.
“We are confident because, over the past three years, we have consistently gone down to the ground to engage with the community, understand their problems, and formulate the best approaches to assist the local population. Ultimately, it is the people who will judge,” he said.
Hazem Mubarak stressed that his father’s position as the Yang Dipertua Negeri should not be drawn into political matters, as the role is neutral in the state administration.
“I have always maintained that the Yang Dipertua Negeri cannot be involved in politics. He cannot vote or campaign. Therefore, this issue should not be linked to him,” he said.
However, he acknowledged that his father’s record of governance during his tenure as Chief Minister and as the former representative for Sungai Manila had contributed significantly to the constituency’s development.
“If we talk about his service when he was Chief Minister, of course there was a great deal of development. But for me, I entered politics based on my own determination. His message to me was that if I choose to be involved in politics, I must work for the people, listen to their voices, and protect their interests,” he said.
To support the younger generation, Hazem Mubarak said he is committed to helping university graduates through job-matching programmes, thereby reducing the unemployment rate among qualified youth.
