A storm and strong winds in Pendang, Kedah, damaged MRSM Pendang and several other premises, with no injuries reported
PENDANG: Maktab Rendah Sains MARA (MRSM) Pendang was among the premises affected by a storm and strong winds that struck the district this evening.
Pendang Civil Defence District officer Lt (PA) Yuslina Yusoff said the incident, which occurred at about 6 pm, involved several mukim, including Padang Pusing, Ayer Putih and Rambai.
Other affected areas included Kampung Gajah Mati, Paya Mat Inson and Kampung Lampam, with several houses and premises damaged while fallen trees blocked roads.
She said the department received an emergency call at about 6.30 pm, and six personnel with a vehicle were immediately deployed to provide initial assistance.
“Damage assessment and continuous monitoring were still underway,” she said in a statement tonight.
Meanwhile, the Civil Defence Force (APM) said a storm also hit Mukim Serdang in Bandar Baharu district at about 3.30 pm, causing damage to houses, government premises and private buildings, including areas around Masjid Al Fateh, Kampung Batu 18, Pekan Serdang and Klinik Kesihatan Serdang.
Initial estimates showed four houses and four government premises were affected, although the actual number was still being assessed. No injuries or fatalities had been reported.
As of 9.30 pm, storms were also reported in Kubang Pasu involving Mukim Pering and Changlun, affecting three houses. APM said village heads had been contacted for updates while monitoring continued in affected areas.
The Kedah State Education Department (JPN) also told Bernama that besides MRSM Pendang, other schools affected by the storm include Akademi Sains Pendang, Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Haji Md Ariff and SK Paya Mak Inson, although details on the extent of damage have yet to be obtained.
