Strong 6.8 magnitude earthquake strikes off Sabah coast

A powerful 6.8 magnitude quake hit waters off Sabah early Monday, with tremors felt across Malaysia but posing no tsunami threat

KOTA KINABALU: A strong 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck waters off Sabah early Monday.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) confirmed the quake occurred at 12.57 am with no tsunami threat.

The epicentre was located 49 km west of Kudat at coordinates 7.0° North and 116.4° East. It originated at a significant depth of 678 km.

Tremors were felt across Sabah, as well as in parts of Sarawak and Peninsular Malaysia. MetMalaysia said it is continuing to monitor the situation closely.

The department urged anyone who felt the tremors to submit details via an online form. This data helps in assessing the quake’s impact.

Meanwhile, the Sabah Fire and Rescue Department Operations Centre reported no incidents following the earthquake.

All its stations are patrolling and monitoring their areas to ensure public safety.
