Shah Alam’s Dataran Kemerdekaan and Aneka Walk host the 2026 SUKMA opening and closing ceremonies, says Selangor MB.
KLANG: Dataran Kemerdekaan in Shah Alam has been officially selected as the venue for the opening ceremony of the 2026 Malaysia Games (SUKMA), while the closing ceremony of the prestigious sporting event will be held at Aneka Walk, Section 14, Shah Alam on Aug 15.
Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said the city centre locations were chosen to allow the public to experience the event up close and take part in the various activities, including performances.
“We are announcing Dataran Kemerdekaan for a modest opening ceremony, not a grand one.
“It is simply an opening ceremony to celebrate the arrival of the contingents, including the Para SUKMA contingent, on Aug 15,” he said after launching the Dana Plus Digital Application, which was also attended by State Youth, Sports and Entrepreneurship Committee chairman Mohd Najwan Halimi at the Wyndham Acmar Klang Hotel here today.
Elaborating on the choice of venue for the closing ceremony of the biennial sporting event, Amirudin said the state administration had designated the Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) area as the official venue after taking various technical aspects into consideration.
He said the decision was made to ensure the closing ceremony would be successfully held and leave lasting memories for all participating state contingents.
“The venue is in the heart of Shah Alam, where we regularly host many events, including National Day celebrations. I believe it can accommodate tens of thousands of people and is located outside densely populated residential areas.
“The Selangor government is optimistic that preparations for SUKMA 2026 will proceed smoothly according to schedule through close cooperation among the relevant agencies,” he said.
SUKMA Selangor 2026 is scheduled to be held from Aug 15 to 24, while the 2026 Para SUKMA will take place from Sept 5 to 14.
SUKMA will feature 469 events across 37 sports, while Para SUKMA will comprise 316 events in 10 sports.
The country’s biggest multi-sport event will involve all state contingents, with Brunei Darussalam officially participating as an invited contingent, bringing the total number of contingents to 15.
