Deputy minister Teo Nie Ching hails Malaysian film’s historic selection for Toronto International Film Festival’s Special Presentations section.
KUALA LUMPUR: Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching has congratulated the team behind The Age of Goodbyes on the film becoming the first Malaysian production selected for the Special Presentations section of the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), where it will have its world premiere.
In a Facebook post today, Teo said the film marks a historic milestone for both Malaysian cinema and Malaysian Chinese literature as the first Malaysian film selected for TIFF’s Special Presentations section and Malaysia’s first feature film adapted from a Malaysian Chinese literary novel.
“It is a proud achievement that brings local storytelling onto one of the world’s most prestigious film platforms,” she said.
Teo said the Malaysian-Taiwanese co-production, supported by the National Film Development Corporation Malaysia through its Dana Kandungan Kreatif grant programme, reflected the strength of Malaysia’s creative industry and the importance of supporting local filmmakers in bringing Malaysian stories to the world.
“Congratulations to director Edmund Yeo, novelist Li Zi Shu, producer Dennis Lai, and the entire cast and crew for this remarkable accomplishment.
“Congratulations also to Vivian Sung on portraying the protagonist in this highly anticipated adaptation,” she said.
Teo also wished The Age of Goodbyes success at TIFF and beyond, expressing hope that the film would continue to captivate audiences worldwide and showcase the richness of Malaysian stories on the international stage.
