UMT deploys 26 electric vehicles, including a bus and e-scooters, to advance its smart campus and sustainability agenda, aligning with national blue economy goals.

KUALA NERUS: Universiti Malaysia Terengganu has launched 26 electric vehicles for campus use to strengthen its position as a sustainability-driven university.

The fleet comprises one bus, five cars and 20 e-scooters for use by staff and students across 18 Centres of Responsibility.

UMT Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Mohd Zamri Ibrahim said the initiative empowers the core pillars of campus sustainability and digitalisation in line with national aspirations.

“As a university with a focus on oceanography, marine science and sustainability, UMT cannot just talk about climate change and sustainability,” he said at the launch.

He stated that sustainability is now a strategic necessity, positioning UMT as a national hub connecting academia, industry and coastal communities.

The smart campus agenda is part of UMT’s long-term plan to lead in blue economy, climate change and earth health research.

UMT is also intensifying its Digitalisation Strategic Plan 2026-2030, focusing on low-carbon tech and fully digital operations.

This move is expected to improve energy management and bolster UMT’s standing in international sustainability rankings.

The university remains committed to aligning its work with national agendas in marine renewable energy and food security.

Mohd Zamri also highlighted UMT’s rise to the 801-850 band in the QS World Rankings 2026, up from 1001-1200.

It also ranked 160th in Asia, marking its best performance since participating in international rankings.

UMT maintained its position in various Times Higher Education rankings, including the Impact Rankings.

It was ranked number one in Malaysia and 96th globally for Marine and Freshwater Biology by U.S News & World Report.

“This achievement proves that the expertise in marine and aquatic resources led by UMT staff is recognised on the world stage,” he added.

In conjunction with its Silver Jubilee, UMT will restructure its narrative to become a university that builds the future.
