Terengganu DOE issues 27 penalties for vehicle smoke pollution

Terengganu’s DOE issued 27 compounds and notices for excessive black smoke from vehicles in 48 operations this year, with two cases fined RM3,000 in court.

DUNGUN: The Department of Environment (DOE) in Terengganu has issued 27 compounds and instruction notices for excessive black smoke emissions from January to December.

State DOE director Hamzah Mohamad said the enforcement followed inspections on 1,197 vehicles during 48 operations statewide.

Thirteen compounds and 10 instruction notices were issued under the Environmental Quality (Control of Emissions from Diesel Engines) Regulations 1996.

A further two compounds and two notices were issued under the Environmental Quality (Control of Emissions from Petrol Engines) Regulations 1996.

Two cases were brought to court, with each resulting in a RM3,000 fine.

Hamzah disclosed this after the state-level ‘Ops Gerak’ at the Paka Rest and Service Area on the East Coast Expressway 2.

The integrated operation involved 62 personnel from the DOE, police, Road Transport Department, Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry, and the National Anti-Drug Agency.
