Crane collapse at Bangkok highway site kills two workers

A construction crane collapsed at a Bangkok highway project, killing two people, just a day after a separate crane accident killed 32 in Thailand

BANGKOK: A crane collapsed at a highway construction site in the Bangkok suburbs on Thursday, killing two people.

The incident occurred at the under-construction Rama II Expressway in Samut Sakhon province, according to local police chief Sitthiporn Kasi.

“Two dead and no injuries,” Sitthiporn told AFP from the scene.

Local media reported the collapse happened in front of the Paris Inn Garden Hotel.

Footage from the site showed clouds of dust and rubble scattered after the massive crane fell onto an elevated concrete structure.

The Rama II Expressway, which hosts several major infrastructure projects, has seen several deadly accidents in recent years.

It has earned the nickname “Death Road” due to its history of fatal incidents.

Thursday’s accident followed a separate, more deadly crane collapse one day earlier in Nakhon Ratchasima province.

In that incident, a massive gantry crane used for a Chinese-backed high-speed rail project fell onto a passenger train, killing 32 people.
