Iraq’s transport ministry says Baghdad airport closure was due to a technical problem, denying any security threat and confirming repairs are complete.
BAGHDAD: Iraq’s transport ministry has confirmed the temporary shutdown of Baghdad International Airport was caused by an “emergency technical problem”.
Ministry spokesman Maytham Alsafi said the fault required “immediate precautionary action”. He added that technical teams had begun assessments and repairs immediately.
The closure had prompted speculation on social media about a potential security threat. Officials stressed the halt in operations was purely technical.
Alsafi rejected claims of domestic or foreign security risks behind the closure. He called the reports baseless and urged media outlets to verify information through official channels.
The state-run Iraqi News Agency reported that the airport would reopen “within hours”. This was once maintenance work and final checks were completed.
